Balance it Out a Bit

It’s almost time for the weekend, and I’m lucky to be home again visiting my parents. I got in yesterday afternoon in time to meet my mom for a bite at our favorite local grocery store in the west end.

Look who I caught sneaking a sample.

You know she wasn’t the only one. I always enjoy perusing and sampling the aisles of health food stores.

I tried to talk her into an exotic tofu wrap, but she wasn’t having it, so we sat down to feast on a curry chicken salad wrap.

After a fun evening last night, I hit the gym this morning for Body Flow (a combination of Yoga, Tai Chi and Pilates) and Ultimate Fitness (an ACAC class taught by Vicki that kicks your butt).

I be up in the gym just workin’ on my fitness, you’re my witness.

Would you believe this cool shot was me falling out of a headstand?

I like combining hard physical workouts with challenging mental workouts. Body Flow allowed me time today to check in, pause and practice mindfulness.

THE zen kat

Even though I love an intense sweaty workout, I always try to leave time for meditation, savasana and being a child, or sitting like one anyway.

When my mind races in a flexibility class, I attempt to reach for more rigorous poses, like crow.

It’s important to always balance out our exercise routines.

After a re-energizing workout, I met my mom for lunch at Caffe Espresso.

We didn’t have any fun. 😉

My mother is a fan of consistency, so we went with our favorite Genovese panini, a freshly baked focaccia filled with oven roasted turkey, pesto and provolone, served with a side of sea salt chips.

Persistently Consistent

Stick it, come on you can do this, pull tight.

handstand practice

I was practicing handstands before yoga class today when I noticed how easy it is to jump to the next goal. I spent weeks mastering my headstand, only to quickly jump to my new goal of solidifying my handstand.

It’s important to think about how far we’ve come, not how far we still have to go.

Who knew persistence could be a pain?

As a kid, I remember being persistent in my quest to have fun. That little kid is still very much alive and a part of who I am today.

happy in the snow

Persistent enough to force that giant sled down the little icy hills of Charlottesville.

snow time fun

A snow day was much appreciated on Monday as I persistently chased that well-known childhood high.

snowtime cheer

After an adventurous snow day of sledding, plowing through trails and attempting to throw snowballs, it was time to shed some layers and hop back on the work wagon come Tuesday.

back to work from snow day

First, I had tasks for my summer road trip after our big benefit on Sunday evening.

Hours of work were tucked away and then it was off to the gym for yoga and cardio, but not before I snapped several shots of some savory creations.

Two Fun Evenings

Another snow day in Virginia! Whatever the weather, we can certainly agree that focusing on the positives is the way to forecast a good day on the first day of the week.

Did somebody say sledding?

If we put our energy into dreading a cold Monday, then surely it will be miserably icy. Let’s switch it up and focus on all the bright weekend for Marvelous Monday.

Marvelous is a 20-something birthday party for my roommate, Caroline.

She threw a fabulous party with quirky decorations, featured-themed snacks and of course, some bumping music to pose for pictures on pictures.

See that UVA jersey? UVA basketball won the ACC championship this weekend! Nothing like a little alma mater rivalry, right Andrea? 🙂

Don’t forget the entertaining party favors.

It was a mix of an awesome night after a long day of work on Saturday!

Marvelous is the kickoff benefit dinner for the 2014 C’ville Central Road Trip. Check out our Indiegogo Campaign. Aside from traveling and social media consulting, I’ve been working with Toan Nguyen on a 2-month road trip we’re going on this summer! Here’s a photo from the event last night with plenty more to come.

Two exciting evenings to be grateful for today!

This Salad’s Like a Party

Whenever I think of a good salad, I remember this moment from The Hills.

Audrina was not amused with her date.

Poor guy. It’s never good when your salad is more exciting than your company.

Salads get a bad rap for being boring, but if you find the right recipe, you’re sure to have a colorful party. I headed over to the mecca of salad restaurants for lunch this afternoon at Basil restaurant in Charlottesville to do some work.

Basil Salad

My main dish was off the menu and just as the the owner described, “a different taste for every bite.” It was was made of mixed greens, onions, Roma tomatoes, roasted red peppers, cucumbers, fried pita chips, feta, dates, and pistachios, and tossed in a refreshing sumac, lemon and extra virgin olive oil vinaigrette.

I couldn’t get enough delicately sweet dates.

Aside from their multi-layered salads, Basil is also known for their savory hummus.

The garbanzo beans are soaked overnight, boiled, and combined with lemon, tahini and a hot water mixture to form the right consistency. It’s not overpowering with garlic, rather it owns a hearty and creamy nut flavor, perfect to pair with fresh baked bread.

Speaking of baked goods, you know I saved room for dessert…

Basil cake

The butterscotch banana rum cake stole the show. Three layers of creamy banana cake moistened with rum, studded with walnuts, filled and iced with butterscotch cream and topped with the most decadent sweet butterscotch miroir.

Ricotta cheese nestled in honey joined the cake on the side.

So much craft and precision go into every dish here. The best thing about Basil is the health factor. One of the waitresses lost 10 pounds since she started working there because of the clean food.

If you’re in the Charlottesville area, grab a party (or order one upon arrival) and head in for a tasty feast. You won’t regret it.
