Fresh or Canned

I loved reading everyone’s comments from my previous post. If anyone needs a little uplifting, check them out!

After an early morning workout, I came home to a bowl of oats with grapefruit on the side.

I used 1/2 cup oats, 1 cup almond milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and honey. A few months ago, I never would have been able to eat oats without brown sugar. Slowly, I started adding less and less sugar and I’ve found that I actually enjoy the simple flavors.

Now, some flavors I don’t enjoy as much…

Always on the hunt for a food bargain, I decided to get a bunch of canned veggies. They were $1 each. I didn’t even manage to get a picture of the canned asparagus. I know, what was I thinking? (Side note, the diced tomatoes were really good.)

Needless to say, these veggies were pretty mushy when I started cooking them.

I think I’ll stick with canned beans and corn for now. 🙂 Here’s a few of my meals from the past few days all incorporating fresh foods:

Question of the day: Are you a fan of canned veggies? Do you buy mostly fresh or frozen veggies?

Happy Thursday!

Except for corn, beans and perhap a few others, canned veggies are largely a mushy affair.

  2. cdouglass96 says:

I’ve tried the packaged beans that are not canned…too much trouble! I like them canned and my corn frozen! 🙂

  3. Katie H. says:

We used to do a lot of canned green beans, but now I stick to fresh or frozen for the most part. I do eat canned beans, though!

  4. bezzymates says:

I try to buy fresh, but some recipes are quicker with canned.

Corn from a can oh and bean be it baked or kidney,
I akways have frozen veg in the fezzer cor the rare times im out of fresh for the most part we grown alot of our own. Everything else is bought fresh.

  6. I don’t mind canned corn, beans, and tomatoes for certain meals, but I love them all fresh more. You’ll have to let us know how the canned asparagus turns out, sounds interesting lol

  7. I always purchase fresh when I can or frozen…I hardly ever do a can, because you’re right. Basically mush 🙂

  8. I always have frozen on hand but buy fresh as well. My grocery shopping is mainly in the form of produce lol….I used to buy the no salt cans of string beans and carrots – haven’t bought them in years. I am with you – I buy the cans of beans and the occasional corn.

  9. I rarely ever buy canned veggies. I either buy fresh or frozen. The only canned foods that I ever really buy anymore are tomatoes and beans!

I am definitely not a fan of canned veggies. The only ones I’ll buy are beans and tomatoes. Otherwise, I like the taste, texture, and price of frozen much more!

  11. Canned veggies are a good value. Although you can get them way cheaper than $1 each. I buy them when they’re on sale and it’s good for a quick side dish at dinner when I need it.

  12. I can’t even remember the last time I bought canned veggies, but I guarantee it was only because a recipe called for them. Canned tomatoes are totally normal to cook with I think, but other than that I love the fresh stuff. We used to eat canned growing up and I always hated them!

  13. I buy mostly fresh but I do have this odd thing for canned green beans! I could eat them straight out of the can.

I could not agree with you more regarding veggies!
My parents were raised in the south, I was raised in Florida, aka NOT the south.
I love my veggies nice and crisp, my father on the other hand only likes them once every last nutrient has been cooked out of them and they are reduced to mush…Ick! 🙂

  15. Definitely not a fan of canned veggies – they just have the strangest consistency. The only things I’ll buy canned are beans, and that’s usually because I’m too lazy to prep them the old-fashioned way. But other than that? Fresh and crisp all the way ❤

  16. I love adding cinnamon to oatmeal in place of sugar. Cinnamon and fruit and nut butters is always my go to! I prefer fresh or frozen veggies. I do like canned corn and peas though. I know canned peas aren’t good but it reminds me of being little lol

  17. P says:

I love okra. Never seen it in canned form before, although I have had it in pickled form (yummy!!)

  18. Carrie says:

OK, but when fruits and veggies are on sale, you *have* to buy them, right? 😉 I love canned black beans because they’re perfect for adding to quinoa.

  19. Definitely love fresh better most of the time, but I reaaalllly love canned sweet peas. Think it reminds me of my childhood 🙂

  20. I buy all my veggies fresh. I have a weird texture thing with canned veggies. I do buy beans in a can though. Also, that can of diced tomatoes is awesome in chili!

  21. Some veggies I dont’ mind canned. Canned tomatoes are a lifesaver in the winter when tomatoes get to be pretty pricy. Green beens are okay canned (they’re kind of mushy and oddly squeaky, but I stil llike them. My cats LOVE canned green beans).

  22. Sean M says:

We eat no canned veggies. The quality, not to mention the chemical content, is just horrible. Honestly, we’ve dumped ALL cans from our house. We either buy fresh or frozen or if we want something like beans, chickpeas, etc., we buy organic bulk and prepare them overnight.

  23. Ah, I’m also a sucker for a good deal! I know how you feel 😛

I will buy canned corn, beans, and sweet potatoes. But, yeah, everything else is too mushy! Plus, they often add lots of salt. I’ll go with frozen if I don’t feel like prepping.

  24. Brittany says:

I don’t care much for canned foods. I do buy canned beans, but am trying to get away from that too. The linings of the cans aren’t the greatest and can leach into the food. I love me some fresh veggies, never canned for me! Frozen on occasion!

  25. Kammie says:

The only canned veggies I use is diced tomato and beans (I know that’s not technically considered a vegetable but yeah) and sometimes sweet peas. I don’t really eat corn. But I usually try to buy as much fresh or frozen as possible. But living alone, it’s not always possible to buy and use it all up so canned is sometimes the way to go for me.

  26. NDBalances says:

i’ve never tried canned asparagus, but i love fresh asparagus from the grill! frozen asparagus isn’t too bad either 😉 i usually avoid canned veggies bc sodium/bpa, but i do use canned tomatoes for marinara sauce and canned corn for soups! i never buy canned beans tho, since it’s a lot cheaper to buy them dried and soak them yourself 🙂

  27. The only time I buy canned veggies is when I make the traditional green bean casserole at Thanksgiving. Other than that, I buy fresh or frozen!

  28. Meredith says:

i can pretty much only do canned beans, corn, and tomatoes. I’m just not a big fan of canned vegetables, but I do buy frozen vegetables depending on the quality and price of fresh produce! what are your vegan pancakes? yum!

  29. Allie says:

Mmm, I’ll eat okra in any way, shape, or form–canned or no! In winter I go for frozen veggies most often, while summers mean my own fresh produce or good farmer’s market finds!

  30. Katherine says:

Okay girl I am the same way with the brown sugar. At one point I was probably eating tablespoons of it on my oatmeal. Um not good! I had the exact same kind of oatmeal this morning. Kind of weird! It’s so delicious! I tend to go fresh with the veggies in the summer because my farmer’s market sells some great stuff, and I like to try to buy local! 🙂
